  1. An attorney cannot make a living being a pro bono attorney on their own. They would need to be independently wealthy to do so. There aren’t many lawyers out here who are pro bono lawyers, in the sense that they do nothing but pro bono work. I suppose there are a few independently wealthy attorneys, or attorneys who have non-lawerly paying jobs pro bono lawyers. Much more common are attorneys who have law practices of one sort or another— whence their living who regularly or occasionally will handle a case on a pro bono basis.

  2. There is no payment other than feeling good about yourself. Pro bono work is done voluntarily without compensation. There are attorneys who work for non-profit organizations that provide free or low cost legal services, typically on a means-tested basis, but they are paid by donations to the entity from private and public groups.
